My aunt Rita Rubin Lowe was in the first class of WACS during World War II. She was stationed in Carlsbad New Mexico--and it's there that she met her (future) husband, Captain Arnold Gluck. Thence she was sent to Bakersfield, California, where she was in charge of a battered steel desk, trying to keep the records of her army colleagues in decent order despite heat, dust, and anxiety. She and her beloved emerged from the armed forces after the war ended, married, and lived for forty-odd more years in joy and prosperity. Once in a while good things come from bad.
