About "On the Map"

The past is told not just in books and on websites. It is all around us, but we rarely see it, especially the history of women. You can visit a handful of places that are landmarks in American Jewish women's history – the Statue of Liberty bearing Emma Lazarus's poem on its base, the site of the tragic Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire, Barbra Steisand's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame – but like other under-represented groups, Jewish women have left few lasting marks on the American landscape.

Part of including the stories of Jewish women in the larger narrative of American and Jewish history is making sure that the struggles and accomplishments of Jewish women are visible in the spaces where they took place. How many buildings, works of public art, and historic sites acknowledge the contributions of American Jewish women? Where are the landmarks that tell the stories of Jewish women?

What should I add to the map?

Help us fill in this map with places you consider significant to Jewish women's history. The places need not appear in a history book. They may have special meaning to you, your family, or your community. You be the mapmaker. It's great if you have a photograph, but you can add a location whether you do or not; just enter the address and Google Maps does the rest. Put your stamp on history and spread the word!

You can upload more than one image, but it is very important that you only upload photos that belong to you, that are in the public domain, or that you have gotten the rights to use.
