My first political activities were at Cornell... I went to my first picket line, which was to support the sit-ins at the Woolworths counters in the South. I have a recollection of making a decision to go to that, which I think was either during my junior or senior year. It was a big deal to allow myself to think that I could go out and make a public statement by carrying a placard and walking on a picket line. Now that routine is very familiar to me, but at the time, even though it wasn't a threat of danger, it was just psychically being exposed like that was something to think about.
