Alan D. Crown

Alan D. Crown was Emeritus Professor (personal Chair) in Hebrew, Bible and Jewish Studies at the University of Sydney. The author of many papers and books with a special focus on the Samaritans, he was awarded the Order of Australia (AM) for services to education. He was the Joint Master and Chairman of the Jewish residential college, Mandelbaum House, at the University of Sydney. Prof. Crown died on November 2, 2010.

The status of Samaritan women today seems to be dominated by four factors: the dearth of women in the community, the desire of the community to avoid diluting its traditions, genetic problems deriving from inbreeding, and the rules pertaining to ritual purity.
