Patrizia Veroli

Patrizia Veroli is an Italian dance historian. She has authored and edited a number of books mostly related to early twentieth-century European dance. Her research on the Jewish dancer Angiola Sartorio appeared in her book Baccanti e dive dell’aria (2001).

Angiola Sartorio

Angiola Sartorio was a prolific dancer, teacher, and choreographer who subverted fascism in her artistic choices. Sartorio had a company and school, and her company was widely well-received in Italy until it performed for Hitler in Vienna and she had to flee to the United States.

Tatjana Barbakoff

The daughter of a Chinese mother and a Russian Jewish father, Tatjana Barbakoff used her mixed heritage as inspiration for stunning and innovative dance performances. Her expressive technique entranced critics, while her costumes inspired dozens of painters and sculptors to capture her likeness. In 1944, she was killed in Auschwitz.
