Other sources credit Mrs. Aaron Levy and Ms. Hannah Levy (relationship unknown) with starting the Female Hebrew Benevolent Society.  They called upon Rebecca Gratz at the outset because of her experience in secular charitable work.  Gratz was the first secretary and held that position for over 40-years.

Addtionally, I am perplexed by the sentence: The FHBS remained an independent society until the late twentieth century. It remains independent and thriving to date, January 6, 2018. I have been on the board or an officer for the past 34-years.
