Community Stories

Discover the stories of whole communities of Jewish women through oral history interviews, videos, and images of objects central to their lives, from the women who took leadership roles during Hurricane Katrina to cookbook author Joan Nathan explaining how she chooses recipes to Holocaust survivor Magda Schaloum's collage made from materials she scavenged in Dachau.

Boston’s Soviet Jewry Movement

Spanning the mid-1960s through the early 1990s, the movement for Soviet Jewry was an international campaign to secure two basic human rights for Jews--their right to live openly as Jews within the Soviet Union and to freely emigrate if they wished to do so. During the summer of 2016, inspired by a sense of urgency to capture their stories before they were lost, JWA organized a story collecting project to document the experiences of Soviet Jews and American Jewish activists living in the Boston area.

Katrina's Jewish Voices

One year after the Hurricane, in 2006, JWA organized Katrina's Jewish Voices, collecting images and oral histories to ensure that the Jewish experience of this catastrophic event would become a part of the history of America and of American Jewry. To commemorate the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, we spotlight select video clips from the original exhibit. Discover the stories of women in the New Orleans Jewish community who grappled with the storm, its aftermath, and the long process of rebuilding.

Baltimore Stories

From the ordinary to the grand, thirty Baltimore women share their life stories as teachers, businesswomen, philanthropists and communal leaders, as well as mothers, wives, and friends. Together they produce a rich and authentic portrait of a pivotal generation of American Jewish women and their impact on their families, their communities, and the larger society.

Seattle Stories

Weaving Women’s Words: Seattle Stories showcases thirty women, born in the early 20th century, who made their homes in the Seattle Jewish community.

Washington D.C. Stories

Nine Washington, DC women—including award-winning cookbook author Joan Nathan and NPR host and correspondent Susan Stamberg—share stories of their childhood homes, their personal struggles, and their transformative careers in this compelling series of oral history interviews
