Rivka Haut, 1942 - 2014

Rivka got me to other agunah rallies, including a pitiful one with five other women circling the tiny front yard of a Manhattan brownstone. It was my last agunah rally but not Rivka’s. She never gave up and never turned down a request for help. For her, it was about justice and compassion, not numbers.

An Orthodox Jewish feminist, Rivka Haut advocated on behalf of agunot (chained wives) and wrote feminist prayers for Orthodox Jews.

While these attempts did much to increase knowledge about agunah agony, this unjust situation is still widespread.

Norma Baumel Joseph

Orthodox feminist Norma Baumel Joseph has published widely on Jewish women and on feminism. Her activism in Canada is largely focused on Orthodox Judaism, and she is highly regarded as an expert on Jewish women and on feminism.

International Coalition for Agunah Rights (ICAR)

International Coalition for Agunah Rights (ICAR) was created to solve the problem of women whose husbands refuse to grant them Jewish divorces, through a combination of education and activism. Although some of the member organizations remain active in North America, ICAR itself has become a primarily Israel-focused coalition.
