Audrey Flack

The only female member of the founding group of photorealists, New York-born painter and sculptor Audrey Flack is especially recognized for the feminine content in her art. Her feminist sensibilities manifest in both her pioneering paintings, which often consider stereotypes of womanhood, and her sculptures, frequently depicting goddesses and other strong female figures. Flack’s work appears in prominent collections around the world.

Lee Krasner

The child of Russian-Jewish immigrants, Lee Krasner was a staunch supporter of the integrity of modern art and one of the only painters in New York to work in abstract style before World War II. Despite putting her career on hold for years to aid her famous husband, Jackson Pollack, Lee Krasner achieved recognition in her own right as a gifted abstract painter.

Art in the United States

American Jewish women have made major contributions to the art world as artists, photographers, gallery owners, museum curators, art critics, art historians, and collectors. The number of American Jewish women artists rose in the 1930s, and their activities expanded from painting into sculpture. This growth of Jewish women artists continued into the 21st century.
