Sexuality

Timeless Sex Education

Wilma Asrael is an 84-year-old Baltimore native. Though it’s now in vogue, she’s has been talking about effective sex education since the sixties. She worked as a sex educator for over twenty-five years, after training as an occupational therapist and receiving her master’s in Education.

The 21st Century Scarlet Letter: A Look at How the High School Rumor Mill Affects Teenage Sexuality

I was a sophomore when I first stumbled across Easy A on my Netflix browser one lonely Friday night. The green poster, exclaiming in bold lettering, “Let’s Not and Say We Did,” was the first thing to pop up under the “Top Picks For Hannah” banner. It instantly grabbed my attention. Intrigued, I clicked play.

Coloring in Between the Lines

When I was in 6th grade, I hit a boy in my class over the head with my lunchbox because he called my best friend gay and said that my jacket made me look gay too. I knew that he wasn’t using “gay” as a nice thing, and I was infuriated on my friend’s behalf.

JWA's Greatest Hits: Fetishizing the Jewess

Jewish women are hot right now. According to an article in the men’s magazine Details, “Jewish women have become the ethnic fetish du jour.”  And in true men’s magazine fashion, Christopher Noxon revels in the opportunity to eroticize and exoticize Jewish women; using dehumanizing terms like “cultural mutt” and “JILF,” meaning “Jew I’d like to…”—you get the idea.

Of Peonies & Penises: Anita Steckel’s Legacy

Anita Steckel was 82 when she died last March. But Anita, her many fans would insist, was way younger than most of us will ever be.

The "fine madness" of discovering Lesléa Newman

During an otherwise unidentifiable undergraduate semester, I took a class called The Psychology of the Lesbian Experience.

Backing up birth control, and each other

In an ironic, but perhaps unplanned turn of events, this year's Back Up Your Birth Control Day of Action comes the day after the premiere of season 4 of 16 and Pregnant. (And if you think I haven't been waiting for this television event since the end of last season...you would be wrong.)

One Jewish mother's approach to vaccinating her sons for HPV

Two people I know have had run-ins with HPV, the Human Papilloma Virus. One was a man my age that got a mouth cancer which was viral in origin.

Without apology: The atonement stops here

For a few semesters in college, I was a Peer Health Sex Educator.

Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis make the same movie

Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis, the Jewish stars of the acclaimed 2010 film Black Swan, have apparently made two different versions of the same movie. As Blind Film Critic so clearly depicts in this trailer mashup of No Strings Attached and Friends With Benefits, these films are identical right down to the camera angles.
