Susan Weidman Schneider

As founder and editor of Lilith magazine, Susan Weidman Schneider created a space for Jewish feminists to discuss issues that deeply affected them. Schneider began publishing Lilith in 1976, at a time when the emerging Jewish feminist movement found little support in either feminist circles or the religious community. The journal became a crucial forum for discussing everything from Jewish rituals to abortion to stereotypes of Jewish women. Both as editor-in-chief and in her own writing, Schneider invited debate and sparked important conversations on issues affecting Jewish women, and her articles and editorials have won several journalism awards. She is also the author of Jewish and Female, Intermarriage: The Challenge of Living with Differences between Christians and Jews, and Head and Heart, a book about women’s issues with money. She serves on a number of boards for organizations that support Jewish women, empower teens, and create networks for charitable giving.
