Gail Twersky Reimer

By collecting the history of Jewish women in the Jewish Women’s Archive, Gail Twersky Reimer ensured that anyone with an internet connection could get a more accurate, inclusive version of the Jewish story.Reimer was born in 1950 to Holocaust survivors who immigrated to America from Poland. After graduating from Sarah Lawrence College and receiving her Ph.D. in English and American Literature from Rutgers University, she taught at Wellesley College and served as Associate Director of the Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities. In 1995, recognizing the dearth of information about Jewish women’s contributions to history, she founded the Jewish Women’s Archive (JWA), one of the world’s first digital archives. Reimer led the organization for nearly two decades, during which time JWA became an internationally-recognized, fully accessible source for Jewish women’s history and also developed creative educational and public programming. Reimer has received numerous awards for her work as an educator and Jewish communal leader, and is the editor of two books: Reading Ruth: Contemporary Women Reclaim a Sacred History (1994) and Beginning Anew: A Woman’s Companion to the High Holy Days (1997). Reimer has worked in other genres to share stories of Jewish women, serving as executive producer for Making Trouble (2007), a documentary about Jewish women comedians, and as director of In the Footsteps of Regina Jonas (2014), which won several awards from North American film festivals. As of 2018, Gail Reimer lives in Brookline, Massachusetts, and serves on the board of the Massachusetts Foundation for the Humanities.
