Alexandra Fine and Janet Lieberman

Using crowdfunding and cutting-edge technology, Alexandra Fine helped create the first successful hands-free couples’ vibrator in 2014 to overcome the difficulties women face in achieving orgasm during sex. Fine began studying human sexuality at Washington University in St. Louis, where she taught sex education through Planned Parenthood and the Red Cross and earned a BA in psychology and women’s studies in 2010. She went on to earn a master’s from Columbia University the following year. She became interested in the “pleasure gap”: men were twice as likely as women to orgasm during sex, in large part because most women needed clitoral stimulation that didn’t usually occur during sex. In 2014 she launched an IndieGoGo crowdfunding campaign with Janet Lieberman to create Eva, a hands-free vibrator assembled by a 3D printer. Fine used the skills she had learned during two years as a marketing coordinator and general manager at Babo Botanicals to create a business plan for the new vibrator. Their wildly successful campaign created a flurry of media attention, and the pair’s company, Dame Products, has continued to expand, now offering eight vibrators alongside a variety of other products. As of 2023, Dame Labs has used the feedback of more than 10,000 people to inform the development process. The company’s Clinical Board makes its pleasure products the first on the market to be “doctor approved.” In 2018, Fine was listed as one of Forbes’ 30 under 30 – Retail and Ecommerce. In 2019, Dame sued the New York MTA for discrimination in advertising after its campaign was denied space; Fine argued that the MTA disproportionately targeted women’s pleasure advertisements because it permitted ads with suggestive imagery and/or men’s sexual health concerns. The lawsuit was eventually settled.
