Joseph Machlis

Joseph Machlis (1906–1998) was professor emeritus of music at Queens College, N.Y. He taught in the graduate division of the Juilliard School. Among his books are the The Enjoyment of Music and Introduction to Contemporary Music. Machlis also wrote several novels, including The Career of Magda V. and Lisa’s Boy. His English version of Francis Poulenc’s opera Dialogues of the Carmelites was presented at the Metropolitan Opera. He was a close friend of Jennie Tourel.
