As director of the Child Study Association of America, Sidonie Matzner Gruenberg blended the best research on child development and her own experience as a mother of four to offer advice to parents. Gruenberg grew up within the Ethical Culture movement, attending their Normal School (later Hunter College), and when she became a mother, she joined their Federation of Child Study, a group of mothers focused on finding the best methods for childrearing and teaching them to other parents. In 1913 Gruenberg wrote her first book for the Federation, Your Child Today and Tomorrow, which fused conventional wisdom and the latest research and relayed it through language parents could understand. In 1940 she won the Parents Magazine Award for We, the Parents. Gruenberg served as director of the organization from before their re-branding as the Child Study Association in 1923 until her retirement in 1950, making it her life’s work. Over her career, she wrote twenty-six books and countless articles and pamphlets on childrearing, culminating in a four-volume New Illustrated Encyclopedia of Child Care and Guidance in the 1970s.
