Rabbi Bernard Mehlman is the senior scholar at Temple Israel of Boston. From 1978 to 1999, he served as the temple’s senior rabbi. In the 1980s, he made several trips to the Soviet Union with his colleagues and various congregants. He was also active in the resettlement of Soviet Jews in the Boston area and helped facilitate the emigration of several high-profile refuseniks, including Ben Charny (Anna Charny’s father).
