The Jewish Librarians Association was formed in 1946 by Sophie Udin of the Zionist Archives and Library in New York and was composed of academic and research librarians. Dr. Herbert C. Zafren, librarian at Hebrew Union College, became president of this group in 1965. The Jewish Library Association was founded in 1962 by Miriam Leikind; its membership consisted of synagogue librarians and librarians of Jewish community centers. Some were professionally trained librarians; many were nonprofessional volunteers. The two associations merged in 1966 and became the two divisions of the new Association of Jewish Libraries: the Research and Special Libraries (R & S) Division, and the Synagogue, School and Center (SSC) Division. http://americanjewisharchives....
