Thank you for this review. Much appreciated. I know something about Seghers, am far from an expert on her life. but I do appreciate this review. It is fair and balanced I worked for five years in the Secretariat of the World Peace Council, of which Seghers was a founding member and key participant early on. In its formative period, while yes it was certainly dominated by Soviet politics, still it had life and vibrancy. Among those who she worked with - Picasso, Sartre, Ilya Ehrenburg, Frederick Joliet Curie, and from the USA, Howard Fast, WEB Debois and Paul Robeson. It was largely responsible for what became known as the Stockholm Peace Appeal, one of the first global efforts to counter the then U.S.-Soviet nuclear arms race. In any case, my interest in Seghers focuses around her book, made into a film, "the Seventh Cross" which I look forward to reading. ... Cheers, R. Prince/Denver, Colorado.
