I first saw the Marx Brothers' 1930 film, "Animal Crackers," many years ago when I discovered a beautiful young actress/singer named Lillian Roth. She sang the movie's theme song, "Why Am I So Romantic?" She looked beautiful and effervescent doing it. The next time I saw the young Miss Roth on TV was when she did "The Love Parade," with Maurice Chevalier and Jeanette MacDonald from 1929, and was so entertaining as the young maid doing songs and dances acquired from her vaudeville days with her younger sister, Ann. Little did I know that this was the Lillian Roth who was the subject of the biographical film, "I'll Cry Tomorrow," with Susan Hayward doing her Oscar-nominated performance as Lillian, whose career was interrupted by alcoholism and mental illness before she rebounded and made a remarkable comeback. Yes, Lillian Roth will go down as one of the great feel-good stories of entertainment history. There will never be another like her's, I'm sure. Also, I recommend that people visit the website, LucyWho.com, with a wonderful picture gallery of Lillian in her prime, plus a few pictures from her latter life. You will enjoy it immensely.
