I was born in Lakeview, which was a facility for un-wed mothers, most of the Jewish faith. I was not taken home immidiately, and I remained in the nursury. My given name was Geraldine Bernice Balaban. I was taken home for a while and that did not work out. I was placed in the Hebrew Infant Home that I believe was in the Bronx. and then went to the Hebrew Orphan Asylum. My mother (the woman that adopted me) was a social worker, and some how managed to become my foster mother. I was taken home in March of 1937. I was 2 1/2. Several years later I was adopted my foster family. I became Gerri D. Sands. My mother and father had 3 natural children that were older than me. I was an extremely lucky child. My sister, Lillian was 23 years older than me. My brother, Carl was 13 years older, and my brother Daniel, was 6 years older than me. My mother died when I was 16 years old. I remained with my family, until my last year in college. At that time, I moved to the Clara de Hirsch residence. I lived there for just about a year, when I married. My sister, and two brothers have long passed on. As an adult I looked for my birth mother, and I found her. She was a nice lady, but she was not my mother. She told me about my father, who was of Italian heritage. I was able to contact a daughter of my birth father. It was a great surpirse to her. She is 14 months older than me. We communicate my e-mail every day,but she is not ready to meet me personally. She was the only child of her mother and her father, who was my father also. She is also a product of a Jewish mother and Italian Father.
