From what I understand, Max was the older brother of Charlie, Herman, Louis, and Sophie. Moishe was the father. I believe Herman was born in 1890, but Max or "Mendel" was born 1867, 11 years before Sophie and 12 years before Louis. It could be that he was not handed the business along with his brothers because he was so much older. And one wonders whether he even had a different mother back in Poland. I began creating a family tree which I would be happy to send to you if you like.
I keep in touch with my first cousin, John Milgrim, son of Nathan Milgrim (brother of my mother, Myrna). Nathan's dad was Samuel who was a son of Max.
