I recall seeing Alicia Markova dance Saint Saens 'Swan' at London's Festival Hall in the late 1950s, I guess about 1957. It was my very first live classical ballet experience and she moved me very deeply, so much so that I was in tears at the end of the piece. I remember nothing of the other pieces in the matinee recital, but I cannot forget the Swan. I was a robust young man then, now in my late seventies; I shall never forget Markova's dancing and acting. The experience opened a whole new world to me and lead me to a life long love of Classical Ballet.
