This book is wonderfully written, capturing the lively and yet difficult times of the immigrants who arrived and survived the Ellis Island confusion. Mrs. Jastrow recalls in loving detail her years growing up in New York City with her parents...often humorous with memories of her mother and father at odds over some issue. Living in a neighborhood of others struggling to cope with the old and the new with amazing courage. I was given her book in 1979 as a gift from my then young daughter. My own papa had arrived at Ellis Island in 1912 and the photos with memories helped me to try and imagine what he endured as well. A treasure which I have re-read many times. Thank you, Mrs. Jastrow.
