My American family spoke highly of the Herzbergs. It seems that the Herzbergs opened their home to my Great Grandmother, Rebecca Kahn Zinman, around 1900. My Great Grandmother-- along with her children (all born in Latvia) -- stayed with them while all were on their way to the US to meet Rebecca's husband Herschel (Harry) Zinman.
I would love to know why the Herzbergs were so generous. Was it their strong support for Zionism and Jews? Or was it an effort to extend themselves to family who escaped Latvia?
