Judith's parents had already left Bergen-Belsen when the British Army liberated the prisoners in that camp on 15 April 1945. Abel J. Herzberg and Thea Herzberg-Loeb left Bergen-Belsen around 10th April 1945 on one of three evacuation trains consisting of about 2.500 prisoners each which were headed for an unknown destination but believed to have been Theresienstadt or Switzerland where they were to be exchanged for Germans. After wandering around war-torn Germany for almost two weeks under the most extreme conditions, their train was liberated by the advancing Red Army outside the village of TrÌÄå¦bitz, some 60 km east of Leipzig. Because of grave illness the liberated prisoners, including Judith Herzberg's parents, could not be repatriated until June 1945. For a full account of the journey and life in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, the reader is referred to the English translation of Abel J. Herzberg's diary "Between Two Streams - a diary from Bergen-Belsen" translated by Jack Santcross, himself a Dutch-born Jewish prisoner who shared Abel Herberg's experiences. The book is currently available in paperback, published in 2008 by Tauris Parke Paperbacks, ISBN: 978 84511 750 4.
