Perhaps it be possible to provide some evidence and clarification for the claim that "Gottheil was lecturing on French literature at Columbia University."

Emma Gottheil's NYT obituary merely states that she lectured on French literature after her move to New York City. While a few select women received a graduate education at Columbia's graduate and professional schools in the 1880s and the 1890s, Columbia College only admitted women in 1983, and the faculty was not exactly welcoming to women colleagues. It might be possible, though, that as a "faculty wife," Emma Gottheil taught courses about French literature at Barnard College.

Many thanks! Dagmar Riedel
