Katya began as a yoga teacher at Sarah Lawrence College in an era when very few Westerners knew anything about Hatha Yoga. She was such a popular and influential teacher that in 1969, the Physical Education department invited her to do a 3 hour seminar every Wednesday, which was packed into a small portable trailer in a parking lot. She incorporated not only yoga, but Tai Chi Chuan and Feldenkrais, later expanding the movement repertoire to dramatic improvisation. A group of students were loyal to her, attending the seminar every week and considering her as influential on their personal, artistic, and intellectual development as any other professor at the College. I have used her teaching techniques all my career, and am grateful for her influence, humor, and insight, every day.
