I remember seeing Bea Arthur perform the lead role in Lysistrata at the New School's Dramatic workshop. Back then, in 1947, I was then only thirteen years old. My big sister Madeleine, who was preparing for her NYU master's degree in English literature, made sure that I had read the play before attending the performance, so that I would understand the plot. I have often thought that modern women should emulate Lysistrata by withholding their sexual favors from their lovers and husbands in order to prevent them from waging war!
