Tosia Altman was my father's first cousin. My father was born in America, but during his education in Berlin, as Hitler came to power, he tried to persuade his uncle and family to leave Poland, as he could see what was happening. My dad left Berlin in 1936 and never told us of Tosia's heroism, only of the deaths of so many of his family living in Poland. While watching the movie, The Uprising, I finally learned about this courageous woman, and only now am learning more about her. Her death was not only a tremendous loss to our family, but I can see now what a loss to the world's idealistic vision of living harmoniously through communal support and care.
