Your recent New Yorker cartoon about cave art - It turns out that the picture caption was invented around 700 BC by a Greek vase painter.  Nobody had ever thought before that of putting words and pictures together.  Around 500 B.C. some artist invented the idea of showing words coming from a person's mouth - the :"baloon caption" that we are so used to now.
