While each woman’s story is unique, pervasive themes do characterize the history of American Jewish women. As Jews, these women participated in the religious and cultural life of their faith and experienced the changes that occurred in Judaism in the American environment. As women, they generally saw family and social relations as integral components of their lives; these relations served as the foundation for increasing activism in a wide range of arenas outside the home. As Americans, Jewish women experienced the growing-pains and joys of the developing nation. In the intersection of these three roles, American Jewish women provide a unique perspective on the history and development of North America, the Jewish community, and women’s roles.
