Rosa Mordecai

In the 1850s, Rosa Mordecai attended the famed Sunday school that her great-aunt Rebecca Gratz had created, which was the first to offer American Jewish children an education on Jewish history and religion in English. As an adult, Mordecai and two of her sisters created a private school for girls in Philadelphia, which they ran for forty years.

Sara Ann Hays Mordecai

Sara Ann Hays Mordecai, niece of education pioneer Rebecca Gratz, passed on her famous aunt’s love of Jewish education to her seven children, three of whom went on to build a school of their own. After her husband’s resignation from the military brought poverty to the family, they supported themselves from the success of her children’s school.
