The Shaarai Shomayim is the fourth oldest Jewish community in the United States, and the second oldest in Pennsylvannia. The Temple was founded when Jospeh Simon settled in Lancaster in 1740, the first Jew to live in the town. Joseph Simon was Rebecca Gratz's grandfather.
