My grandma Dora Reimer Volk opened a deli/grocery during the depression in 1929 to help support the family. Grandpa Alexander apprenticed as a diamond cutter/setter back in Riga Latvia where they both attended grade school. He practiced this trade in downtown and there was little demand for his skill and product at the time of the depression.
