Jewish Women on the Map - Shearith Israel Graveyard

Location

Shearith Israel Graveyard
57 Saint James Place
New York City, NY
United States

This is the oldest Jewish cemetery in the Untied States. It was for the Shearith Israel congregation, which arrived in 1654 from Brazil--the first Jewish community in American history. In 2009, Artist Susan C. Dessel created "Still Lives," a multimedia installation to honor and explore the women of this community, who are named only as "wife of" or "mother of" on their tombstones.
