This is the oldest Jewish cemetery in the Untied States. It was for the Shearith Israel congregation, which arrived in 1654 from Brazil--the first Jewish community in American history. In 2009, Artist Susan C. Dessel created "Still Lives," a multimedia installation to honor and explore the women of this community, who are named only as "wife of" or "mother of" on their tombstones.
