Lina Hecht, American-born wife of a prominent German Jew, founded the Hebrew Industrial School in 1890 to teach eastern European Jewish girls how to cook and sew. A few years later, the school moved to Boston's West End and began teaching immigrant boys as well as girls to be "wage earners, breadwinners and self-respecting intelligent citizens."
