On this location, April 14, 1875, a "Spelling Bee" was held as a benefit for the first Hebrew Sunday School, started by Rebecca Gratz in 1838, on her fifty-seventh birthday "with sixty students enrolled. Gratz became the school's superintendent and served for more than twenty-five years."
