Radical labor activist Rose Pastor Stokes was arrested on March 22, 1918 for an anti-war speech she gave in Kansas City and a letter to the local paper in which she declared, “No government which is for the profiteers can also be for the people, and I am for the people, while the government is for the profiteers.” She was convicted, but it was overturned on appeal.
