Emma Lazarus (1849 – 1887) was a celebrated American poet.. She is best known today for her poem, “The New Colossus,” which was written in 1883 as part of the effort to raise money for a pedestal to the Statue of Liberty. It is now engraved on a plaque in the Statue of Liberty.
