Florence Kahn (1866-1948) was elected to the 4th Congressional District of California by special election following the death of her husband, U.S. Rep. Julius Kahn in 1924. At the time, California's 4th Congressional District was comprised of San Fransisco county. Florence Kahn, a Republican, was the fifth woman and first Jewish woman to serve in Congress. Following her tenure in Congress (1925-1937), she was active in the American Association of University Women, Hadassah, and the Council of Jewish Women.
