Wilmington, N.C.'s Community Arts Center was renamed in honor of Hannah Block in 2005. Once a cabaret singer, she was the first woman elected to Wilmington's city council and the first to serve as mayor. Remembered as a home front hero during World War II, she was active in the USO and worked to promote spirit among local troops. Hannah Block's piano, which she played for troops during the War, now has a home in the Wilmington Community Arts Center.

North Carolinians came together on November 8, 1997, to honor Hannah Block. Learn about this event in This Week in History.
