Bel Kaufman, who became famous when she published her best-selling novel Up the Down Staircase, comes from a family of writers. She is pictured here as a child, sitting on the knee of her grandfather, the great Yiddish writer Sholem Aleichem. Her mother, Lyala Kaufman, was also a successful writer.
