The daughter of German-Jewish philosopher Moses Mendelsohn, Dorothea Schlegel, née Brendel Mendelsohn, abandoned her father's religion, the husband he had chosen, and even the name he had given her at birth, to marry the controversial Christian literary theorist Frederick Schlegel.
