Bialystok-born Fania Metman-Cohen and her husband Yehuda Leib were part of the Zionist circle of Ahad ha-Am, who advocated the establishment of a unique Jewish cultural-educational movement in Palestine. The couple realized these aims in their founding, first a Hebrew school in Rishon Le-Zion, and then Israel's first Hebrew high school, the Herzlia Gymnasia.
