Bella and Martin Abzug

"Oh, he loved to tweak people and say things like 'Hiya sweetums' to me because that was not exactly de rigueur in front of a bunch of strong feminists. He had this enormous sense of humor. I never knew what he was going to say....

"It was like having a warm fire: wherever I went over the years of struggle, there was always one place where the hearth was - Martin. I was enveloped by the warm fire of him....

"Now, every day, the fire has to be lit all over again....

What can I tell other people, that might help them, be of use? All I can say is, cherish your relationship, make sure you do whatever you possibly can to fulfill it. I had a dream recently, and in it I asked him, 'Martin, Martin, what should I do now?' And he smiled that funny smile he had and disappeared..."
