Abzug at the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing

Abzug at the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing
"As a result of hearings held in Beijing, WEDO realized that breast cancer was an international issue and together with the Breast Cancer Committee of Kingston, held the First World Conference on Breast Cancer in July of 1997....The result of which is working to develop a Global Action Plan to Eradicate Breast Cancer.

"The breast cancer epidemic is truly an international public health crisis. The death toll for women from breast cancer is expected to exceed half a million globally by the year 2000....

"In the face of so much pain and my own personal history of breast cancer, I remain an incurable optimist. I believe we can work together for positive change, because we share a vision that cares deeply about all people, all creatures, all life on our planet.

"Some call this an eco-feminist vision. Some call it a spiritual and humanist vision. Some call it transformational vision. I call it possible...

"We are each powerful creatures. So each of us should ask - how do we, as women and men ... use our knowledge and capacity and unique gifts to bring about health - meaningful health, for all people, the planet and future generations?...

"Whether you are two breasted, one breasted or non-breasted, this is a two fisted fight against cancer, and we shall not stop until we win."
