I got a remarkable phone call from the Gates Family in Seattle ... after getting Bill Gates' father, who was in charge of the foundation, to actually come and visit Hopkins -- which was a wonderful experience for him as I've been told, and really changed the direction of the foundation into the public health mode -- we received a grant, first for two million. Then because they liked what we were doing so much, a year later, we were asked what we would do that was bigger and that's when the Bill and Melinda Gates Institute for Population and Reproductive Health was formed. I became its founding director so that totally changed [my] life. We are involved in leadership training all over the developing world [and] we are involved in trying to strengthen the individual and institutional capacity in the developing world to handle and design and monitor their own programs in this field.
