I was very aware of politics and the repressive atmosphere of the McCarthy era in the l950s. I gave talks for Adalai Stevenson for President in an all-republican elementary school, so I was aware, outspoken and interested. I got involved in peace activities in high school and went to a socially aware summer camp when I was fourteen and a half that was run by progressives.
