"First, get very educated, from as many different angles, on the issue. Get as much knowledge as possible. Second, you've got to be passionate to be effective. So choose something you can relate to. I don't think you can be an activist about something you're not passionate about. Third, if it's in another country, go there and be there, and hear what the people there have to say about it. For example, I'm going to Nicaragua to build houses in a community project. Get into it. Get the ugly stuff. See it, so you have a motive and a passion."
