My father said I could do two things: he said I could be a teacher or a nurse. And that box was so small and I was so resentful of the idea that Gary got to go to medical school and I went to teach, that it was very clear that I was not happy with the framework. And I remember reading The Feminine Mystique and thinking, 'I am not crazy. I am not alone.' And realizing that I needed a different kind of structure and that life in New Haven wasn't going to do it.
